Kavitha Krishnamurthy is a legendary Indian playback singer. She is born on 25th January, 1958. She began her music training at a very young age with her aunt Mrs. Bhattacharya who taught her Rabindra Sangeet. After completing her training she began her formal training in Hindustani classical music under the guidance of Sri. Balram Puri. At the young age of nine she got an opportunity to record a Tagore song in Bengali with the legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar under the prominent music director ‘Hemant Kumar’.
At the age of eight she won her first gold medal at a music competition. Subsequently, she won gold medals as she participated in the Inter-Ministry Classical Competition in New Delhi in the mid 1960s. Later she moved to Bombay, when she was 14 years to try her luck as a playback singer in the hindi films.
Ranu Mukherjee the daughter of Hemant Kumar took the initiative of reintroducing Kavitha Krishnamurthy to her father. He was highly overwhelmed by her skills, so he gave her an opportunity to sing during his live performances. In one such performance, ‘Manna Dey’ spotted her talent and employed her to sing for commercial jingles. She met Mrs. Jaya Chakravarthy, who later took the initiative of introducing Kavitha to the prominent music director ‘Laxmikant’. He gave her a chance to work as a dubbing artist. Kavitha impressed Laxmikant with her soulful timbre voice. Later she has sung the song called "Kaahe Ko Byaahi" in the film ‘Maang Bharo Sajna’ in 1980 which featured in her own voice. In 1985 her career took off with her first major hit, "Tumse Milkar Na Jaane Kyon". This success brought her many opportunities. The song "Hawa Hawaii" and "Karte Hain Hum Pyaar Mr. India Se" from the film Mr. India these two songs became a sensational hit, the collaboration of Kavitha and Laxmikant-Pyarelal produced many sensational hits songs.1942 A Love Story from RD Burman’s music gave her a lot of popular acclamation. She also lent her voice to several Indian actresses. Later she married Dr. L.Subramaniam who is a prominent world class violin player

She has received many awards and rewards from the government organizations and non- governments organizations. She received consecutive Film fare Awards from the 1995 to 1997. Received Film fare for Best playback singer for the songs ‘Pyaar Hua Chupke Se’, ‘Mere Piya Ghar Aaya’, ‘Aaj Main Upar’, ‘Dola Re Dola’, ‘Star Screen Awards’ for the song ‘Aaj Main Upar’ from ‘Khamoshi’, The ‘Zee Cine Awards’ for Best playback singer for the songs ‘Nimbooda’ from ‘Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam’ and ‘Dola Re Dola’ from ‘Devdas’. The ‘IIFA Award’ for Best Playback singer for the songs ‘Dola Re Dola’ from ‘Devdas’, and she also won many awards.
